Streulicht on Purpose

Usually Photographers mount something called a lens hood in front of their camera lens when shooting outdoor on a sunny day. In Germany people call these thing Streulichtblende. It sounds much nicer than lens hood, so i will use the German word instead :)  In short, this photographic accessoire prevents that light enters the lens from the side, causing different (mostly unwanted) “side”-effects on the final image. The graphic below illustrates the Streulicht behaviour.

Most Photographers are aware of this and try to avoid Streulicht as best as they can.

I found that Streulicht can be something artistically valuable, and should not be banned from the photograpic exposure at all costs. I urge myslef to experiment and start utilizing it in a controlled and creative way, to get photographs with an extra layer of  unique colors and a overall lower contrast vintage look, without any use of expensive software plugins, just by the Power of Ra! ;)

Here two out-of-cam examples of how it might look like, depending not only on entrance angle of the light …
